Many people thinking of a touring holiday in a hire vehicle would probably never consider Italy as a viable destination. Italy is in fact a very good choice of destination for a fly-drive holiday, especially for European residents who are on a tight schedule. A particularly good short break would be a whistle stop tour of the Tuscany region. The tour would start with arriving at Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport in Rome, and picking up a hire car from any of the international hire companies which operate there, including Avis, Europacar, Budget, Sixt and Hertz. Either spend the day exploring Rome, or head out on the open road towards Florence. Spend a day in Florence exploring the art and architecture before heading off to Siena via San Gimignano and Certaldo, an attractive region of open countryside and vineyards.
Spend a day or two exploring Siena, a well preserved medieval town with a host of historical attractions before moving on to Cortona and the amazing view it commands across Lake Trasimeno. You could possibly spend the last days of your tour by relaxing in Arezzo, a tranquil and beautiful town renowned for its antique trade and pavement cafes, finally choose the departure airport of your choice and drop off your rental car at a convenient location (probably the airport) before ending your vacation and flying home, a great way to see plenty of Italy in a short period of time, at your own pace.
